How to dress for autumn

A chill in the air. Darker nights. Crunchy leaves on the ground. The launch of Strictly. Yep – it’s officially autumn.

Not sure what to wear?

After one of the hottest summers in the UK’s history, navigating the colder autumn weather can be a little tricky. But it doesn’t require a complete head-to-toe reinvention of your wardrobe.

Just recondition your muscle memory (i.e. stop reaching for those floaty dresses and short-sleeved tees). Read our expert guide on how to bridge the gap between the seasons. And invest in a few staples to create the perfect autumn outfits.

4 tips for autumn styling

1. Learn to layer

Autumn is the teenager of the seasons – known for its mercury mood swings. From crisp mornings to muggy afternoons, the temperature blows hot and cold. And the key to getting your autumn looks just right is onion layering.

Start with the base, such as a t-shirt or vest top, then add multiple layers in a variety of textures.

Grandma dressing is having a bit of a moment right now, particularly the classic cardigan – which is perfect timing for heading into the colder months! So why not treat yourself to a big chunky knit? And simply pull it on/peel it off according to the current climate.

2. Invest in borg

Borg should be the official fabric of autumn styling

Similar to shearling (just minus the animal cruelty), this faux sheepskin-like material is super soft, super snuggly and seriously warm. It generates and retains heat, particularly when combined with a rich cotton or teddy fleece outer, and is the perfect companion for chillier days.

Whether you want to stay cosy on the morning commute or need to keep the heating bills down whilst WFH, be sure to invest in at least one borg lined hero this autumn.

3. Embracer the power of a puffer

Not the full-blown midi-length puffer coat (just yet) – but its pared-back sister, the puffer gilet.

Also known as bodywarmers, puffer gilets are a huge trend for AW22. Lightweight and thin enough to be layered up, yet bubbled in design – they’re practical, versatile and create a cocoon of cosiness around the body. One of the easiest ways to insulate, without compromising on style.

Grab one from our collection. Pop it on over your favourite turtleneck or hoodie. And we guarantee, it’ll become the hardest working addition to your autumn wardrobe.

4. Thicken things up

Autumn dressing doesn’t have to be rocket science.

If you’ve got a particular style and you want to stick to it, stick to it. Wear the same things you’ve been wearing all summer, but just opt for thicker, more autumn-friendly fabrics.

Switch out those short-sleeved cotton shirts for a hefty fleece-lined alternative. Replace your lightweight sweatshirt for a heavy cable knit cardigan. Rather than that floaty floral maxi dress, don a figure-hugging midi jumper dress instead.

It’s simple really. Just thicken everything up and ditch the sandals for some waterproof boots.
