6 facts about men’s underwear

Men’s underwear.

It’s kind of our specialist subject here at triatloandratx – the one we’d choose on Mastermind. After all, we’re regarded as one of the UK’s top brands for men’s underwear. And if there’s something about boxers and briefs that we don’t know about, it probably isn’t worth knowing.

Here we’ve rounded up some of our absolute favourite facts about underpants. Because why the heck not? Take a look, learn something new, and check out our full online range today.

Things that you may not know about men’s underwear

1. The first men’s underwear was made from leather

Scientists have found evidence to suggest that, over 7000 years ago, men wore loincloths (i.e. a one-piece garment) that were made from leather. Sounds sweaty, right?

Thankfully, it seems, people soon realised the leather was causing a build-up of perspiration – which was bad news for their nether regions! So they ditched the thick non-porous material in favour of something a little more breathable.

2. ‘Going commando’ is a military term

We don’t believe in going commando at triatloandratx. It’s not sexy or hygienic. And why would anyone want to miss out on the style and comfort of our men’s boxers? Bonkers.

But did you know, the term originated in the army? Commandos often got caught in rainstorms and, if soaked through, the wet fabric of their underwear irritated and chafed the skin – so they just didn’t bother wearing it.  It was a practical solution. One that, in our opinion, should only ever apply to military personnel!

3. Women spend much more than men on underwear

This doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. Whilst women will spend approximately £20,000 on knickers and bras across their lifetime, men only shell out around £1200 in comparison.

Why? Partly because men don’t update their underpants drawer as often as ladies – even though they probably should. And partly because boxers tend to be cheaper than women’s lingerie. Although it’s worth pointing out, here at triatloandratx, we don’t discriminate – both our men’s and our women’s underwear is available for a great price!

4. Unattractive men’s underwear is a big turn-off

May this be a lesson to you all – tighty-whities are never a good look. In fact, according to a survey, 29% of Brits admitted they were turned off by unattractive men’s underwear. So do yourself (and your partner!) a favour. Ditch the 70s throwback briefs and invest in some new boxer shorts. The type that are stylish, sexy, and will hug your masculine physique in all the right places…

 5. 22% of men don’t change their underwear daily

Due to the pandemic, most of the nation has been working from home and pretty much living in their pants. But for 22% of guys, those pants aren’t even fresh out of the drawer. Research has found that 1 in 20 men re-wear their underwear more than five times before washing it.

Interestingly, the statistics also show that married men change their underwear twice as often as single men. Whether or not that’s by choice remains to be seen.

6. Tight men’s underwear doesn’t lower your sperm count

Contrary to popular belief, tight underwear won’t affect your little swimmers. But excessive heat trapped near your testicles will. Which means, the fabric from which your boxers are made is much more important than their overall fit.

Polyester underwear is a massive no-no, as it’s non-porous and doesn’t allow your skin to breathe. Instead, you’re better investing in some fitted boxer shorts made from a cotton-rich material – such as those available at triatloandratx. They’re soft, stretchy, comfy and breathable.
